Since April, I’ve been working on a side project called Untold Stories. Its focus is on preserving history while getting to the root of how technology has effected our society. I spend an awful lot of time on the computer and internet, much more than the average American, I’m sure, and I know it takes a toll. My eye sight has suffered, and so has my posture. I sadly no longer feel the urge to call up a friend when I can just message them online, and there is a constant stream of information coming my way from a myriad of sources.
I know I’m not the only one wondering how it will affect us. I’ve seen three-year-olds buried in tablet screens, pre-teens with their own smartphones;we’re distracted, absorbed, plugged in. These new generations aren’t going outside to play as often as we did (they are outside for >1 hour a day, as opposed to our elders who were outside 3+ hours a day), getting dirty, creating, and socializing with friends. What will that do to their brains and to our society?
I’ve decided to find out. Since April I’ve been interviewing people born before 1940 about their view of our changing society. I know it’s easy to romanticize the past, to look back and say “it was so much simpler”. But I didn’t live back then, so I’m no authority on the subject. I can bet most of the people writing similar articles didn’t live back then, either. The Silent Generation and Greatest Generation were born at a time when airplanes were barely in use, most families didn’t have cars, and some didn’t even have electricity or running water. They know the truth, and I’ve decided to seek it out.
The Kickstarter funds will go toward my travel to each interviewee. I have been to five states and conducted 33 interviews so far, but firmly believe we won’t have an accurate understanding unless the research is diverse and broad. The plan is to interview in each state and territory to that end. I am lucky I chose a career that allows me to both travel and maintain my business. I know most of you never suspected that I’ve been traveling the country since April.
If you know what I’m talking about and feel passionate about the subject, back the Kickstarter and help make this a reality: http://kck.st/1h14HWW Thank you.
